Gigi Salomon: Sculpture and Installation
Gigi Salomon is an artist whose practice spans sculpture, installation, and experimental devices, with a particular focus on stone carving, printwork, and photography.
Her recent work explores low relief in stone and plaster alongside an ongoing series that juxtaposes ancient and modern “tools for living”, reflecting her interest in human activity, ritual, and the traces we leave behind. Whether they be brochs, Saxon, Norse, Roman or Christian, these settlements of the British Isles are examples of the connectedness through time which she seeks to emphasise in her work.
A recurring feature of Salomon’s practice are her observations of the natural world and the science developed to make sense of our place in it. She explores measurement such as weight, depth, frequency, and time by using found objects. No longer used for their original purpose, these materials are metmorphosed to create kinetic installations, drawing machines powered by visitors where the drawings are a result of a collective and shared endeavour.
Her “Sculpturescape” installations of landscapes are inspired by history, myth and stories. She uses optics with light and found objects to create illusory landscapes which while questioning notions of perception, immerse visitors in these liminal spaces—thresholds between the visible and invisible, past and present. In the resulting photographic series, Salomon extends these ideas, translating her sculptural and installation work into images that explore light and space. Her experience as a BBC Radio feature and documentary presenter and writer informs her interest in storytelling, observation, and layered narratives, creating work that invites reflection.
